Trunk - Carrier- Topcase |
|
|
Okay - you have to go to the store and you discover that carrying three bags of groceries while riding in traffic ain't all that much fun. Just look at those big Harleys - they have saddlebags, and a - - ah - - hhmmm - - "Trunk"?? Searching the Internet and reviewing eBay's offerings reveals that there is one "big" maker ("Givi") and a host of other, unknown makers -- mostly at much lower prices than Givi's typical $150 to $250 baseline. The model seen here was offered by http://shop.vendio.com/evan2002/ "Acifica" -- I took a chance on their honesty, ordered one, and held my breath. |

We were scheduled to leave Chattanooga for a week's trip to Durham, NC to help one of our kids' family with renovations on a house they were buying. As you can believe, the package arrived at 4:30pm on the day we left at 9:30am. Ah well. |

As soon as we got back home, I made it a matter of top priority to check the new toy -- and was happy to see that although not a perfect color match, it was satisfactorily close. The mounting system supplied was not perfect either, but after taking the Honda carrier apart to remove the cross-bars with their bungee-cord anchors, and making a run to the hardware store to buy a couple of slightly longer machine bolts, the mounting appears to be more than adequate. After all, the Honda carrier warns that it must not be used for more than 5 kilograms (11 pounds.) I think I'll ignore that if you don't mind.

My first grocery trip showed that a half-gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, several peaches and bananas, two packages of lunchmeat, a big tomato, a large jar of dry-roasted peanuts; filling two of those plastic bags and more, fits easily in the trunk. I found that it will easily hold my bubble-face helmet with room to spare. This is both easier, and safer, than hanging it on Honda's helmet hooks. |

This rear view demonstrates one disadvantage of the "cheap" trunk - - that is not really a light. However - that can be corrected; see this! When asked about my disabled tag, I usually tell nosey folks that this is actually a fast wheelchair. |

Although I have yet to convince my first wife and partner of near-50 years to ride with me, that back-rest looks as if it should not be too uncomfortable. Altogether a real bargain in my opinion at $58.00 plus $18.00 shipping; compared to big-name units like Givi at more than twice that much. |
