"Clip Nuts" Plastic panels demand some kind of "reinforcement" to hold screws and bolts that have to be removed and replaced more than once or twice. Honda often uses sheet-metal nuts that "snap" into raised protrusions on the back of a panel. Unfortunately, these nuts rust, come loose, and get lost easily. Using an oversized screw in the panel is not the answer! Hardware stores may or may not have exact replacements for the several types of original equipment nuts; here's a substitute. These cost about 30 cents each. A tiny drop of plastic glue on each end of the push-nut (I like "Goop") will keep it in place during assembly. |

Stopping Rust Have I mentioned that I hate salt on roads? It is one of the reasons that I was happy to leave Cincinnati and move to Chattanooga! This is the result of scooting on salt-treated roads in Pa. and Oh. when the Elite was just a baby. I wish the previous owners had taken the time and effort to wash off the saltwater after riding in the wet. Even the aluminum heat radiator of the ignition module is corroded. |

A brushing with "Extend" converts most of the rust (iron oxide) to Iron Phosphates which not only do not "grow" like rust, but actually seals the base metal from farther rusting. A second brushing will be done to catch places missed the first time around. I don't think I'll mess with the ignition module, but I worry about what's going on inside the electrical connectors. Damned salt. Here's the Loctite-USA Website. You must search for Extend to view info. After going through their "Consumer Products" pages and searching for Places to buy Extend in Tennessee, I was told there are none. Apparently Ace Hardware isn't talking to them! Oh; you can't contact them because their contact form PERL script is defective! |
